Keith Miller’s ‘Sparkling Spa’ wins 2019 Americas Property Award for Best Bathroom Design in Washington, USA

(SEATTLE, WA) – This fall, Stuart Shield, president and founder of the International Property Awards, and Lord Richard Best, Judging Panel Chairman, presented Keith Miller with the 2019 Americas Property award for the best bathroom design in Washington, USA.

The International Property Awards celebrate the highest levels of achievement around the globe in all sectors of the property and real estate industry, including interior design and architecture. Participants enter at their relevant national or regional level and are judged by a highly experienced team of professionals.

The award was announced at a gala dinner event in Toronto on Oct. 3. Awards were given for the quality of design, construction, and presentation of individual properties.

Miller’s entry, ‘Sparkling Spa,’ showcased a redesign of the client’s master bathroom. The goal was to transform the client’s least favorite room in their home into a space with the 5-star luxury spa sensibilities to which the client had grown accustomed in their travels abroad. The master bathroom’s starting point included an over-built tiered acrylic tub, awkwardly mirrored L-shaped vanity cabinets, and difficult-to-access storage. The overall effect was so unpleasant that the couple would often shower in their children’s bathroom to avoid the experience of daily rituals in their own bathroom.

Miller’s award-winning design stripped the bathroom of its existing finishes and furniture, pulling back drywall to reveal cleaner architectural lines and embellishing the base, case, and crown molding. The design featured a centrally located freestanding tub and furniture-style casework in an open corner to foster anthropometric movement.

The closed-off shower room was replaced with a full corner frameless glass shower enclosure with a properly drained and tiled pan, walls, shaving shelf, and inset soap and shampoo storage. New materials like heated stone tile flooring and a cleanable, handmade natural wool area rug in a classic Moroccan style were designed to dissuade pretentions of formality without compromising the luxurious sensation.

“Keith just totally blew us away with his design,” the client said. “We had absolutely no idea that bathroom could look and work as well as it does now. We love it! We just have to laugh at what it used to be — how did we ever live with it like that? It went from being the ugliest room in the house to the most beautiful. It’s so stunning we just like spending time in it. Until the rest of the house gets done we have our wine parties here, it’s that fabulous. Makes for great conversation!”

The International Property Awards are sponsored by GROHE and American Standard.
