Pantone 2023: Welcome to the Magentaverse

pantone color of the year

I’m not gonna lie, I will miss referencing all year long Pantone’s color this year. I about jumped out of my seat as it was revealed. It’s a personal favorite (I know. WOW.). It is a bold, exciting, and invigorating shade. Full of life and celebration, the 2023 color is PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta. This color descends from the red family and is inspired by the natural red of cochineal, one of the brightest and most precious natural dyes.

Viva Magenta was chosen for its brave and fearless signal of strength and unrestrained self-expression – YES! Let’s do it!. The color is grounded in nature, empowering and promoting joyous optimism. It’s like they’re peering straight into my soul!  Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director at Pantone, puts it this way:

“Rooted in the primordial, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta reconnects us to original matter. Invoking the forces of nature, [Viva Magenta] galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength.”

Such a beautiful statement. It has to be a little odd for anyone reading this to have me, a dude, prattle on about pink, but man, all my kid years I wrestled working out what my favorite color is. In my college years I settled on blue-violet – It felt so very Bat-Manly. Still a favorite, but as I matured I found qualities I possess, both outrageous joy AND a quiet calming presence, both ever active, expressed based on the room I’m reading, magenta – the more vivid the better – is the perfect representation of that paradox. The passionate fire of red, the soothing calm of violet. It’s a perfect unifier for … decidedly expressive people. So if you’re as expressive as me or find yourself highly entertained by those of us who holler out the happy, have a look at what this hue is doing inside:

Viva Magenta Interior Design

In interior design, this red magenta color brings exciting versatility into any space, and with it, carries an air of exuberance. Whether a small color accent or an entire wall, Viva Magenta makes a statement that delights the eye and energizes the soul. Its bold nature allows for other bold choices, from unusual art to unique furniture. The possibilities are nearly infinite, but let’s take a look at a few ways to incorporate this color.

Bold Simplicity

One of the great characteristics of magenta is its undeniable brightness. As such, you can simply let the color do the talking. Painted walls, hallways, or doors don’t need anything else to be beautiful and striking. The straightforward and uncluttered spaces below are anything but plain. Rather, it creates a one-of-a-kind interior with just a quick coat of paint.

Layered Levels

However, magenta can go from simple to exaggerated with just a few extra layers. One can never have too much magenta, and the color itself allows levels to build upon each other. For example, these interiors feature magenta floors as they intersect with magenta walls. Bright sofas mirror the colored walls behind them while textiles reinforce the flashy monochromatic look.

Lively Patterns

Consequently, Viva Magenta is aptly named, the invigorating color imbuing life in every space. But, beyond the solid color, magenta creates incredible patterns that seem to vibrate with energy. Printed wallpapers add yet another layer of complexity to interior spaces. And patterned textiles boost the passion and excitement within a warm sitting space or a lively entryway.

Magenta possesses a versatility that can be used to design patterns in all styles. Traditional florals and intricate paisley add a vintage touch with a modern twist. Other patterns become more geometric and minimal, big shapes and thick lines that lead the eye. The different prints below demonstrate the epitome of magenta being rooted in nature, flaunting birds and fruits next to flowers and greenery.

Furniture & Fixtures

Nevertheless, entire walls and large surfaces covered in magenta may be a touch overwhelming. Perhaps it simply isn’t your taste. Luckily, incorporating the exciting red hue can be as effortless as purchasing the proper furniture piece. An overstuffed chair, an extraordinary coffee table, or even special light fixtures. Using magenta as a color accent provides intriguing decor that adds to the flowing energy within the space.

Take it to the next level with magenta cabinets and cupboards. In the kitchen or the bathroom, painting the cabinetry provides a dramatic transformation without a traumatic remodel. Covering doors and drawers in a vivid color like magenta brings warmth and life into the space, making it feel homey and luxurious at the same time.

Viva Magenta plays a vital role in this year’s world of design. And, as such, it breathes life into everything it touches. Maybe magenta isn’t your favorite color, but its exciting and joyful energy provides inspiration for all your dream design projects.

Our mission is to turn those dreams into your reality. No matter your color palette or your preferred style, we want to create a space that feels and looks like you.
